Engine Specs & Performance

2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV gray closeup front fascia shotThe 2021 Hyundai Tucson has two distinct engine options that are available to its drivers. It comes standard with the 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that’s able to generate 161 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. For drivers looking to take their performance to the next step, the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine is able to boast 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.

Each engine comes mated to the 6-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®. These engines also feature Gasoline Direct Injection. This fuel delivery system will inject gasoline directly into the combustion chamber. It’ll vary the amount delivered based on your level of performance as to limit the amount of fuel wasted.

MPG Efficiency

Since there are two engine options, the Hyundai Tucson MPG will vary. Of course, the drivetrain that you’ve selected will also alter the fuel economy. When outfitted with the 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, the Tucson with Front-Wheel Drive gets an EPA-estimated 23 city/28 highway/25 combined MPG.1 That figure changes to 22 city/25 highway/23 combined MPG with All-Wheel Drive.1

When the Hyundai Tucson is outfitted with the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine, it gets an EPA-estimated 22 city/28 highway/25 combined MPG with Front-Wheel Drive.* When it features All-Wheel Drive, it gets 21 city/26 highway/23 combined MPG.1

Things that Affect Your Tucson MPG

Technician filling engine with new oilWhen you’re looking to get the most out of your 16.4-gallon fuel tank, you’ll want to keep up with routine services—particularly, the oil change. If you’re driving on older oil, your engine won’t perform as efficiently and will actually burn up more fuel to maintain its normal performance.

The amount of weight in the vehicle also plays a factor at affecting your fuel efficiency. If you’ve got all the seats filled, the cargo area packed, or even a roof rack with your materials on top, it’ll put more weight on the vehicle and it’ll need to use up more fuel than usual in order to achieve your desired performance.
